Splatting around the Rainmaker (9-6, Tri-slosher Nouveau)

6th January 2017 – 7.00 pm

I forget how useful Seekers are in Rainmaker, and they've got better in general with their wider trail. They don't stop personal stupidity, though, and my eagerness to get past the Rainmaker, shield intact, is not my smartest moment.

I hopefully make up for that initial mistake immediately afterwards, with some aggressive sloshing of the opposition, pushing them back nicely. The next bit of sloshing doesn't bag me the splats I'm after, but does keep the green team occupied again.

One of us should probably get the Rainmaker. Like the green team do. And it's not just me, but that Rainmaker really did come at me too quickly, given that it was actually an Inkzooka.

But we do pick up the Rainmaker, and make really good progress. I head a different way and am able to ink up to the podium and suppress the respawning squids, but, sadly, am not as certain about the proximity of the Rainmaker as I thought.

After not seeing an Ink Mine in time, I am able to sneak around the back and catch the Rainmaker off-guard. That gives me the opportunity to carry the Rainmaker myself, but some pressure and an oncoming Bubbler makes the route look uninviting.

I go a different way, and try some strategic Rainmaker blasts, which work quite well. A Disruptor is my downfall, as I make a break for the podium, but that's okay. One more tussle in the middle of the map, and it's a victory for us.

I think I did something in Rainmaker (4-2, Tri-slosher Nouveau)

6th January 2017 – 7.00 am

I think I contributed to this Rainmaker battle. I was pretty aggressive, and successful at splatting the opponents, at the start. I would like to say that I distracted the yellow squids enough to give my squidmates an advantage.

I don't think I did much afterwards, unless you count finding safety violations concerning guard rails.

Getting the splats around the Splat Zones (9-6, Splattescope)

5th January 2017 – 7.00 pm

I want to hang back in this Splat Zones battle in Walleye Warehouse, take care of the turf, apply pressure to encroaching threats. But I can't resist going mobile and trying to apply more direct pressure.

Sure, it doesn't work, not at first, but approaching the Zones from a different perspective seems to help. Not only are the purple inklings not looking in my direction, but I get in to a rather neat spot, it seems.

I keep laying down ink in the Splat Zones and splatting the occasional inkling until an Inkzooka from the past catches up with me. But that's okay, because the counter is counting down and already at five. Time for a 'Nice!' victory high-five!

Okay, if ever I did a premature celebration, it's this time. Still, the extended battle gives me time to get more splats, including against the Heavy Splatling and another on the Inkzooka, which doesn't shoot back this time.

I don't even mind the fumbled throw when I get two decent splats afterwards, and avoid every Killer Wail aimed my way. It may not be a knockout, but it's a good victory!

Back and forth in Splat Zones (7-3, Splatterscope)

5th January 2017 – 7.00 am

I feel guilty squidding slowly behind the Roller, and just as guilty splatting ink over his head. But we both take the same route, so without going a sub-optimal way for me there's not much to be done. We'll work something out.

My opposite charger seems to be coming my way. Then doesn't. I drop down to take a look, which at least keeps our Splat Zone secure a little long. But she's just building up her Special to charge in with a Bomb Rush with her buddies. Nice move.

It seems I can't justify staying around our Splat Zone. We need to capture theirs too, and if we can press that little bit higher we should be able to keep both. It also gives me something to do.

Bagging splats against two chargers is nice, even if the second is a mutual splat. Being Squished by a Roller less nice, but it was a bit of a surprise and part of the charm of Port Mackerel. It's good to see the Tri-slosher making good use of the Disruptor too, even if it's on me. At least I'm in a good position to suffer it each time.

Our lead is lost half-way through the battle, but we hold strong and keep enough turf inked to recapture both zones long enough to retake the lead. And although I rely more on my squidmates in the last couple of minutes, I'm sure the ink I fire contributes to something.

Going for glory in Tower Control (7-1, Tri-slosher)

4th January 2017 – 7.00 pm

No chargers on the other side to try to harass, or get splatted by. Let's see if I can flank the purple team for some surprise splats, by going down the side route.

Well, kinda, only helped by my ineptitude at squidding up Flounders Heights. Sloshing ink over my head, walking backwards off the grate, totally pro moves. The delay means they've all gone past the middle by the time I get up there.

I catch up with the others quickly enough, but the Tower eludes me. This is looking like a farce. At least my ink remains from before, and I get up Flounders Heights more smoothly this time. I lose track of the Tower, but that's a minor detail.

Finding the Tower, I slosh ink over it. Good job, tigerears! Now we're moving in the right direction, and I finally feel like I'm making a positive difference. Laying down ink, splatting squids, causing a nuisance. I even remember my Bubbler and Disruptor. This is much more like it.

I get splatted, outranged and vulnerable atop the Heights. I squid back, but look where the Tower is! A quick pause to give a well-deserved 'Nice!' to my squidmates, and I claim some of the glory by jumping on to the Tower at the moment of victory. Woomy!

Taking one for the team in Tower Control (7-1, Tri-slosher)

4th January 2017 – 7.00 am

I go back to the Tri-slosher for a couple of battles, because I normally do well with it on Piranha Pit and Flounders Heights. Seeing the Splatterscope on the other team has my making my opening gambit of flying over the conveyer to engage it, but she's hanging back a bit too far.

Rather than waste my time, I move on, running straight in to a splat. That'll do. Circling back lets me go for the Splatterscope again, this time using a Disruptor to slow her down.

Opportunity knocks for another splat, and the Tower then stands before me, wanting to be ridden. I half-panic and activate my Bubbler, being near a squidmate, but it's a good decision. We feel the full force of a Dynamo Roller ink flick and survive.

The Tower is being taking care of, so I apply some more pressure. My gear gets very unfresh being covered with blue ink, but I survive and dunk myself to make it fresh again, turning back slightly to get another lucky splat.

The Tower trundles ever onwards, and we are all there for the finish. Well, most of us. The Dynamo Roll flings its ink down from above, and I'm in the way. That's fine, if my splat lets my squidmates keep the Tower, and they do. Woomy!

So many chargers in Tower Control (6-4, Splatterscope)

3rd January 2017 – 7.00 pm

An E-litre 3K on our team, along with my Splatterscope. With her longer range, I'll let her take the normal perch overlooking the Tower, if she wants it. Then again, with three chargers on the other team, maybe this will be one of those chaotic battles where you can't rely on normal strategies.

we both have similar ideas of engaging the other chargers directly. Naturally, my aim lets me down most of the time, but it doesn't stop me trying to contribute. Besides, I still have Splat Bombs, and my first Rush bags me a double-splat from some keen inklings.

What follows is a fun and frantic festival of mobile and manoeuvrable chargers. I have to say, I enjoy the rather less conventional battles like this, having to improvise most of the time instead of sticking to the same plan.

Then again, my plan with the Splatterscope is normally to miss most of my shots and use the Splat Bomb Rush to improve my numbers at the end. The second Rush gets me three splats, after all. But my aim isn't totally useless. I don't look to be off my much most of the time, which is encouraging, and I get at least one good splat.

My squidmates do a good job of riding the Tower too, getting a good advantage that isn't beaten. I kinda grab a bit of the glory by jumping on at the end.

Lots'o'splats in Splat Zones (19-8, Tri-slosher)

3rd January 2017 – 7.00 am

On the one hand, I didn't really give the Roller a proper outing this evening. On the other hand, I like running rampant with the Tri-slosher. It doesn't happen every battle, but when it does, I have buckets of fun. Arf!

My main aim is to get to the centre and across to flank our opponents as quickly as possible. I need to be quick, or medium- or long-range weapons will splat me as I pass. In this case, I pause to ink some turf and get rid of a Sprinkler, which nearly gets me splatted by a Blaster as I move to flank.

Once on the other side, I try to be a pest without being an arse, which I think I achieve. Unfortunately, stopping an inkling in the middle of a Suction Bomb Rush leaves me facing a Bomb or water. Not a great choice, really.

I stick with my plan to head for the other side of the map and create a distraction, and I think I manage that quite well. If I'm not splatting inklings, I'm making them pause before the Splat Zones, and am even using my Disruptor effectively on occasion.

Despite our attempts, the orange team take control of the Splat Zones. We kinda need them back at some point. A bit more flanking and popping my Bubbler helps. I'm kept at bay by one inkling, but that just means I splat him and his buddy by the time I get close.

We regain control of the Splat Zones and enough turf to give us a comfortable victory, and plenty of time for me to give a certain 'Nice!', do a bit of a dance, and try the new high-five celebration. I need to practice that, though.

I'll give Rollers another chance, hopefully getting me up to speed with them. But no doubt I'll keep returning to the bucket, for battles like this.

Up and under in Splat Zones (3-1, Tri-slosher)

2nd January 2017 – 7.00 pm

I've had some initial experience with the Splat Roller, and swapped to the Splatterscope for a bit to have some fun for a bit. That doesn't work at all, with an excellent E-litre 3K on the other team denying me any time to find my aim. Let's see what I can do with the Tri-slosher.

I aim to get across the map and cause some disruption, and thankfully evade the ink from the Heavy Splatling initially. Hearing my ink hit something other than turf has my sloshing quickly again, getting an expected splat. I'll take it.

I aim for the Splatling, but don't have the range, nor the aim with my Disruptor, so toy with her a bit. I stay a squid to avoid the Killer Wail, unlike a battle a week ago when I stood up to get splatted. I'm learning.

My Bubbler comes in handy to save me from a splatting, as a squidmate takes care of the Roller. To top off the battle, I slosh ink over an unsuspecting Inkzooka. That'll do!

Doing a bit better with a Roller in Splat Zones (4-1, Splat Roller)

2nd January 2017 – 7.00 am

I do much better in my second battle with the Splat Roller. Admittedly, having an excellent team behind me to take up my huge slack helps greatly. I hope they didn't notice me trying to squid on un-inked turf. I do know how to squid, honest.

I miss the jump-flick on the approaching squid. I miss-time and miss the flick to get the super-jumping inkling. Not being able to jump over a Kraken is just being a squid, and my squidmate has a jolly good attempt at taming the Kraken.

In the end, the victory is fairly straightforward. But, like I say, that's down to my squidmates more than me. I contributed, at least, and the comfortable battle let me play around with the Roller a bit more freely.
