Late push in Tower Control (4-9, Custom Blaster)

6th November 2016 – 7.00 pm

Having dropped out of S Rank, I opt for a different weapon. I think I'd be more effective with the Tri-slosher, but I also don't want to climb right back up to S Rank if I can help it.

I remember that I tried a Blaster in Tower Control before, and that I found it quite effective, so I give it a go again. Of course, it takes me a little while to remember how to use it, so the battle doesn't really go my way to start with.

I don't regret that super-jump. I knew that the inkling on the tower in opposition territory was alone, that my other squidmates were just leaving our base, and that I'd be jumping to my splat. But it held the tower for a couple of seconds longer, and that can be important.

I take some time to wander the map in the middle of the battle. I am actually trying to flank the other team, even though it looks like I'm being a tourist. I think I waste their time a little. Even so, by the end, they have a solid lead over us. I've just had a battle like this in S Rank. We didn't come back from that one.

A minute to go and we don't have control of the tower. Thirty seconds to go and we still don't. Well, maybe I will be staying in A+ Rank for a while. Maybe even drop to A Rank. Unless my Bubbler charges as I ride the tower in to extra time, that is.

Losing to an early advantage in Tower Control (5-7, Tri-slosher)

6th November 2016 – 7.00 am

Down to an S Rank of 1. We either win this game, or I'm back down to A+. I have mixed feelings about this. Let's see what I can do with the Tri-slosher.

An early splat is typical. I recover and get a double splat, albeit sacrificing myself to a Killer Wail so that they lose the tower. That seems like a good trade.

It would have been a better trade had the blue team not retaken the tower immediately and gone on to assert an impressive lead. That's going to take some doing to beat.

The other team are pretty dominant. Their Sloshers are working well, throwing ink everywhere, and for quite a distance. It seems like a good combination to have the short-range Tri-slosher paired with the normal Slosher.

We get the tower, though, and make a decent effort at going forwards. Even though it's not quite enough, we keep the tower in opposition territory. If only we had enough time, maybe we could have gone further.

Keeping it close in Tower Control (9-10, Tri-slosher)

5th November 2016 – 7.00 pm

Tower Control on Urchin Underpass and Blackbelly Skatepark. I opt for the Tri-slosher, even though I know I wanted to stick with the Splatterscope until I drop out of S Rank. I suppose I mostly don't want to think I'm bad with weapons I normally enjoy. But on these maps I think I almost need the Tri-slosher not to feel bad by default.

It's a good, positive start to the battle as well! My Tri-slosher bags me a couple of splats, and I'm feeling good. And my nemesis appears, with his own Tri-slosher. I pretty much assume he'll be better than me, but I can just as much avoid an inkling in a Splatoon battle as I can pick one out. I'll just have to see how it plays out.

Splatting the Dynamo Roller on her wind-up was satisfying. Being too late the next time is normal and nothing to get upset about.

I try to use the Tri-slosher to its advantage, looking for higher ground, or throwing the Disruptor to slow down the other inklings. And I try to keep mobile, staying out of trouble when I can and going around the other team if possible. I think I do okay.

The battle remains really tight throughout normal time, and it looks good for a victory for us. We just need to reclaim the tower in extra time. We've done it so far, it shouldn't be difficult now.

Becoming a Patrick Queen in Spongebob Splatfest (1142p, 4-1, Splatterscope)

5th November 2016 – 7.00 am

Enough losses will eventually add up to a decent total. Thankfully, I make it to SplatFest Queen with a victory! One of not many, sadly, but the few scattered here and there have been good to be a part of.

This battle goes well for us. I thank my squidmates for doing well and pushing forwards. Sure, there is a chunk of turf left behind to ink, but I can do that, and I know they cover it as they respawn occasionally.

The yellow team are held back quite effectively, until a Dynamo Roller makes a break for it down the side route. I am distracted by a Sprinkler in a tree, then panic-aim and miss the Roller, which results in my splat and that of a squidmate super-jumping in. Sorry about that.

I get the Roller as he rolls on, which is somewhat satisfying, and from there our control of the turf continues unabated. It's a decent victory, a good result for me, and an excellent way to get the Splatfest Queen title.

Not a bad effort in Spongebob Splatfest (777p, 6-1, Splatterscope)

4th November 2016 – 7.00 pm

Back for another go at the Splatfest, and I return with the Splatterscope after a couple of mediocre battles with the Wasabi Splattershot. If I'm going to get to be Splatfest Queen the slow way, I may as well make it more difficult for myself.

I can't get mad with that Roller splatting me from a conveyer belt jump. It's what I try to do every time I see a charger in the other team. That'll teach me.

The slosher hiding from my Splat Bomb in the corner is peculiar. Maybe he was just shying away from my Splatterscope, much like the Kraken does when his time to change back comes. That was after I somehow evaded that Killer Wail.

I don't think the Slosher inkling is comfortable in this battle. I get him a couple more times in rather simple circumstances. But I don't mind inflating my numbers a little. I could use it.

Inking and inklings in Spongebob Splatfest (1289p, 3-2, Wasabi Splattershot)

4th November 2016 – 7.00 am

I'm enjoying the Wasabi Splattershot. It's nice to add a new weapon to my choices. I also like Piranha Pit. Having that section off to the side, down the coveyer belt, is very handy for charging your Special, more so if the Special is an Inkstrike that requires no sight of other inklings to use effectively.

I get a couple of Inkstrikes off before I get myself in to any real trouble. And I only get in to toruble because I look for it, and that's because our team is doing quite well at keeping the turf pink. Good job, team.

There is more turf to be inked, though, so I cover that first, making sure we're not going to lose from not filling in the gaps. But when I splat the Roller, survive against the Slosher, and see another Roller head down to our lower-level, I get the pink mist come down. I have to give chase. It ends as you would expect.

My moment of recklessness doesn't compromise my team. In fact, stopping that Roller probably helped us not lose a chunk of ink. Either way, it's a decent victory for us, and a good result for me. Woomy!

Fighting back in Spongebob Splatfest (896p, 5-5, Wasabi Splattershot)

3rd November 2016 – 7.00 pm

I go for a change of weapon, swapping to the Wasabi Splattershot for a change of pace. This battle goes against us pretty quickly. I don't know what my squidmates are doing, but it probably isn't fair to blame them for the other team being good.

We are pushed back to the upper tier of our base, and it looks like we're stuck there, unless we can get rid of the yellow team. I don't think we can, though, which is why they are there to start with.

But I like Bluefin Depot, and know the routes in and out quite well. I take advantage of that knowledge, and my understanding the need to ink and move quickly when trying to escape, and leave them to ink our base yellow. I'll try to make theirs pink.

I make it to their base and although maybe don't quite wreak havoc I at least get their attention. Hopefully the pressure is off my squidmates a bit, but looking at the gamepad I don't think it is.

I make another dash for the yellow base, and dash in to the Splatling. That's okay, as I splat him back, and a second yellow inkling that rushes forwards in to us. Maybe not a productive way to end the battle, but it was very lost by that point, and two extra splats inflate my numbers nicely.

It occurs to me, looking back, that dashing across the map and getting out of a held base would be a good time to use the 'To me!' call. Squidmates can super-jump out of being cornered. I should remember that.

Facing the Kraken in Spongebob Splatfest (1035p, 5-2, Splatterscope)

3rd November 2016 – 7.00 am

Inking turf. That's important for a Turf War. When my Splat Bomb Rush charges, I press out from my perch to cover turf with the Bombs, and to flush out any inklings from the other team daring to cross the half-way point.

I flush out an inkling, but he's smart enough to squid up a wall. Thankfully, a rather wayward Splat Bomb loiters just close enough to splat him as he wanders off. I'd say that's fair.

My first encounter with a Kraken goes well. I avoid him, he turns back to an inkling, I splat him without getting inky. Good job. My next encounter goes as most Kraken encounters goes, with my being splatted. They are scary beasties. But at least I get a collateral splat from my panicked Splat Bomb throwing.

The last encounter I can almost predict coming. I can't stop the inkbrush, though, so he makes the transformation. I do get another collateral splat, though, and, this time the clock may just save me from the Kraken.

Stayin' Alive in Spongebob Splatfest (1272p, 3-1, Splatterscope)

2nd November 2016 – 7.00 pm

A new day, still the Spongebob Splatfest. I'm back with the Splatterscope, feeling more optimistic this morning. Or just wanting to give it another go.

This is my second battle of the session, so clearly I think I can make the Splatterscope work for me, and in this battle I mostly do.

Maybe I don't get too many splats, and maybe, as most times, I make my Splat Bombs do the splatting and not my aim, but I keep myself out of trouble whilst inking a good amount of turf. That's got to be worth something in Turf War.

I splat-steal from a squidmate lurking by a super-jump marker, but we're all on the same team. I'm sure he didn't mind.

I avoid the Kraken near the end, although am sure he squids behind me, hence my focussing my Splat Bombs over there. I was just paranoid though. Maybe the bombs spread some ink.

Decent sloshing in Spongebob Splatfest (1171p, 5-5, Slosher)

2nd November 2016 – 7.00 am

A bit of a stalled beginning to this battle for me. Sure, I ink some turf, but I get a bit muddled by bumping in to the ramp, trying to ink walls, and running out of ink. Even trying to ink the box at my feet goes poorly. But it's okay, I don't think anyone noticed.

I can get back in to a groove soon enough, and am both inking plenty of turf and getting myself a few splats. I do mostly okay with staying out of trouble too. I run in to it occasionally, which is pretty much how I approach being a squid, but at least it doesn't overly skew my splats.

My fellow Slosher inkling, with the Soda variant, has been a great squidmate for the past handful of battles. She disappears after this battle, though, and her absence is noticed.

That's okay, she helped me pick up my game and get some positive battles. Here's to excellent squidmates!
