Kinda helping in S Rank Rainmaker (8-8, Soda Slosher)

16th November 2016 – 7.00 pm

Back in S Rank, back feeling a bit rubbish at the game as a result. I start with the Splatterscope, with pretty much the same plan as before to improve or drop out of S Rank, but it becomes clear that this will demotivate me today. Not the Splatterscope, not in Rainmaker. The Soda Slosher, then. That seems like it would help.

I feel like I can't aim, and with a bucket that's really saying something! No wonder I felt particularly bad with the Splatterscope in the first game. But, then, I am more used to the Tri-slosher than the Slosher, and the Tri-slosher chucks its ink out in a wider spread. I just need to remember I do actually need to aim with the Slosher.

I also need to get better at manoeuvring. Getting splatted by a Seeker is embarrassing, particularly as I also miss splatting a passing Rainmaker. Mind you, I somehow run right past one and splat its launcher a little later.

We're not doing too well in this battle. It looks like it will stay with us in a losing position too, until a burst of activity with the Rainmaker projects us in to the other half of Walleye Warehouse. Can we take the lead?

We have a good carrier of the Rainmaker on our team, just one that has been unfulfilled so far. He gets us the lead. And after I recover from being stunned amid a flurry of ink bombs, honestly thinking I'd been splatted for a second, I slosh some ink in the rough direction of some meddling inklings, splatting one, and watching as our excellent squidmate jumps up towards the podium. Woomy!

Splatting it in Splat Zones (3-1, Tri-slosher)

16th November 2016 – 7.00 am

I can't lose in Splat Zones tonight! I've won every battle, even when it didn't seem like we were winning. I've got knockouts, when I didn't think we were holding the Splat Zones. I'm getting dangerously close to S Rank again!

Maybe the Tri-slosher is helping me out. I love this little bucket. I try to get an early flanking manoeuvre again, and again get distracted by a Slosher in the Splat Zones. This time, my sloshing prevails, and I get the splat and can move on to flank.

I pause to see what's happening, see the Bamboozler come my way, and heroically make him pause to splat me, as I somehow fail to surprise him. Never mind, at least I don't walk backwards off that grate, which I have done too many times before.

Another flanking manoeuvre, and I'm pursued by the Bamboozler again. The noise is unmistakable. I do a reverse Disruptor, thinking myself pretty clever for doing so, and although I don't get a splat I don't get splatted either.

No one here, so I move across the corridor to the other side, where a newly placed Killer Wail suggests an inkling. I splat him, thinking he's the Bamboozler, but no. That was another inkling, and the Bamboozler is hassling a squidmate ahead. I move up and splat him too.

A fresh inkling looks to be dropping in front of my bucket, ripe for splatting, but, to my surprise, the battle ends before I can get enough ink her way. Another knockout victory. Me and my teams have really been splatting it in Splat Zones this evening.

Being sneaky in Splat Zones (5-5, Tri-slosher)

15th November 2016 – 7.00 pm

The Tri-slosher is really working for me today. I stick with it for Splat Zones, and go with my original strategy on Arowana Mall. Sadly, I get distracted by a possible splat in the Splat Zones, instead of trying to flank down the side, and get splatted by a Slosher.

Back to Plan A, and I make it down the side corridor uncontested. There's no one there, that's why. Not a problem. I continue over the main corridor and up to the other side, where there are inklings oblivious to my movements. Excellent.

I don't ink early, which may give my position away, and get one of the most satisfying splats I've had. I follow that up with a second splat, on the Slosher, and pop my Bubbler to make sure I get the Roller. As I complete the triple-splat, I see the fourth inkling, but he somehow ducks under my sloshes to deny me the quad splat. That's just not cricket.

Recovering from the disappointment, I use the Tri-slosher's splayed fire to my benefit, but am ambushed by a Splat Bomb that I remember not to squid away from whilst I'm on a grate. Not a great position for me there.

The Splat Zones are progressing nicely. I take a moment to dwell in our ink, and see a yellow inkling fly far above me. Where is he going? Uh-oh, there are Beakons in our turf. As I realise, the super-jumpers jump me. Thankfully, the Beakons are taken care of by my squidmates by the time I've respawned.

One final bit of sneakiness, again from flanking. A yellow inkling comes my way, and apparently doesn't spot me. I squid underneath the ledge she drops down from, not exactly hidden in my ink, and surprise her from behind. Nice!

Super-quick Splat Zones (3-3, Tri-slosher)

15th November 2016 – 7.00 am

I realised in a previous match that there is no point squidding on the drop down from the base in Museum d'Alfonsino. You don't fall faster. Instead, I ink all the way down, which hopefully is a bit more productive.

I also realise that my Tri-slosher can get pretty good coverage of the Splat Zones from one of the rotating columns. Not that I need it when I get up there, as we have the Splat Zones quite blue.

Indeed, the Splat Zones stay blue for pretty much the entire battle. Even when our counter is stopped, the yellow team don't secure the zones for themselves. This leads to the battle ending much sooner than I think it would.

I'm actually surprised when the battle ends. I thought we were doing okay, but it turns out we were dominating. Woomy, I suppose!

Blowing my big moment in Splat Zones (2-2, Tri-slosher)

14th November 2016 – 7.00 pm

I like Arowana Mall. But instead of using the Splatterscope and sitting on my perch, I'm sticking with the Tri-slosher after its excellent outing yesterday.

And I have a plan for the start of the battle. I will rush the centre, then ignore the Splat Zones and attempt to flank the opposition. Denying them access to the Splat Zones is as good as denying them the Splat Zones themselves.

What do you know, it actually works. A healthy bit of luck tossed in with some decent movement, and the inkling I face chucks a Splat Bomb over the top of me, rather than shooting ink. I splat him and move on.

I ink some opposition turf, take out a Beakon, and spy new targets. How I don't splat them is a bit of a mystery, but they aren't at the Splat Zones. That'll do.

My squidmates have the Splat Zones covered, and press forwards as well to keep the green team away. Good job, squidmates! No one comes my way even, so I just watch the mayhem, until a lone inkling appears. And I blow my moment. Silly tigerears.

What a comeback in Rainmaker (4-10, Splatterscope)

14th November 2016 – 7.00 am

The battle mode changes, as do the maps, and with Port Mackerel and Camp Triggerfish available for Rainmaker I go back to the Splatterscope. Those lovely long corridors should suit the charger well.

Nope, not really. Well, not in my tentacles. This is actually a pretty poor battle for me, getting splatted left and right, floundering in the wrong ink, and just being a bit average.

It's no surprise that the other team take a commanding lead, and look keen to press for the knockout at every opportunity. They really have us over a barrel.

Given that we struggle to get far out of our base, and the Rainmaker anywhere that isn't our podium, it is so much more of a surprise when we break through the other team's line and get the Rainmaker up in their end of the port. We even look like taking the lead!

We don't take the lead, though, only match the opposition's, which then ticks back to being one away. That's not to take anything away from the amazing effort and determination to get the Rainmaker there in the first place!

Also, we're not quite finished, it seems. There is some time left in the battle, and we now have the wind in our sails. Can we? Will we? Woomy!

Pretty solid sloshing in Tower Control (16-6, Tri-slosher)

13th November 2016 – 7.00 pm

The Splatterscope is satisfying to play well, but the Tri-slosher is just so much fun! I swap to give the bucket a go in Tower Control, and it works out better than I'd hoped.

I go the first minute of the game without getting splatted whilst flanking the opposition, Disrupting one, and completely surprising a charger!

I'm now worried that the rest of the battle won't live up to my initial excellence. But it kinda does! Sure, I get splatted a bunch more times, but almost all when actively challenging for or riding the tower, particularly as I kinda lose track of it and see the opposition take a good lead.

My squidmates are excellent, though, and I am having one of my best battles in ages. We take the lead and keep it, pressing for the knockout several times. I even get a quad splat at the 4'25" mark!

What a brilliant battle. I have a load of fun squidding around and sloshing with my favourite bucket, we ride the tower for a convincing victory, and I rack up an impressive number of splats. A split-second longer, and I'd have had another. Woomy!

Splatting in Tower Control (8-5, Splatterscope)

13th November 2016 – 7.00 am

I'm back with the Splatterscope! I'm hoping that having a tower to aim for will get me some splats without having to aim too hard. But we can't have everything we want, it seems.

But I do get some splats! Splat Bombs get me some splats, mostly, particularly the Splat Bomb Rush, but I know how to aim when I have to. That little flurry of splats near the middle of the battle was a lot of fun!

Our lead looks pretty good, and even when the blue team threaten towards the end of the battle, we're still well enough in control to recover without too much hassle. A solid battle to start the evening.

Having good squidmates in Rainmaker (1-1, Soda Slosher)

12th November 2016 – 7.00 pm

I haven't given up on the Octobrush, but am moving between weapons to have a more familiar end to the session.

The Splattershot Jr doesn't go as well as I'd hope, so I go back to the Soda Slosher, which I recently added to my inky arsenal.

The frist splatting is a bit embarrassing, as I could have chucked a Splat Bomb too, but never mind.

I decide to flank the other team after that, although I don't really know where the Rainmaker is. I don't bump in to any opposition, so after inking the podium a little I go looking for them. And I do get to flank them, which is good.

Admittedly, I bamboozle myself in that corner of Kelp Dome, but am soon back on course. The little diversion helps my squidmates ink the path ahead too.

Over the ramp, and I decide to take the same route as before, up and along the grate, instead of down the bottleneck. A squid follows me, and inks the path ahead. Thanks, squidmate!

The opposition are kept busy, maybe wondering where the Rainmaker is, and, what do you know, my earlier inking of the podium pays off! I get a really sweet dunking of the Rainmaker. Woomy!

Not really getting to grips with the Octobrush in Rainmaker (7-14, Octobrush Nouveau)

12th November 2016 – 7.00 am

I'm sticking with the Octobrush Nouveau, probably for a bit. This is my second battle with it, and I obviously don't have the hang of it yet. Don't let that first splat fool you. But of course I don't have the hang of the brush yet, because it will take time.

Also of course, it is more difficult to get the hang of a new weapon when your opponents are trying their best to make using any weapon difficult. And when I still have an urge to squid headlong in to Rainmaker charges.

I am getting better at knowing when I've not actually picked up the Rainmaker, though, which is good. And I get another triple splat, two in two battles, both times bagging the Rainmaker. That I splat myself against the Rainmaker's shield afterwards is of no consequence.

I think I get splatted by the Rainmaker's Shield and other effects more than any direct attack. Is that embarrassing? Probably. Never mind. I'll keep practicing.
