Feeling mostly hopeless in Rainmaker

4th April 2016 – 5.59 pm

2-10 with the Dual Squelcher. At least one of those splats was on the Rainmaker, almost on top of our podium, but I'm just feeling like I'm outclassed in Ranked play still. It's difficult to improve when you're suppressed so effectively in many battles.

Still, I seize an opportunity late in the game that gets us further towards the podium than before in the battle, and my squidmates are there to finish it in overtime.

Maybe I need to concentrate my improvements to situational awareness of my squidmates.

Letting off steam in Turf War

3rd April 2016 – 5.27 pm

My Rainmaker battles keep frustrating me. Lots of skilled squids out to make me lose the coveted A rank tonight, it seems. Swapping weapons isn't helping, so I revert to a battle of Turf War just to feel like I can actually play well.

That doesn't go to plan at first. I thought the Splatterscope would be okay, but it seems that competitive players are in Turf War too.

There's nothing left to do but equip the Splash-o-Matic and wreak havoc as best I can. The start is a little shaky, but I soon get in to a rhythm and show all these 50th level squids that I know what I'm doing.

What are all those 50th level squids doing playing Turf War anyway? Is Ranked going badly for them too?

One squid down in Rainmaker

2nd April 2016 – 5.55 pm

The battle starts with our team missing a squid. I think we know which way the battle is going to go, but there's nothing to do but give it the best of British.

We put up a good struggle, given the circumstances, and I even think we have a chance of winning. The turning point is when I manage to corner myself against the Rainmaker's shield. Our three guns can't out-ink their four, and some shield splats give them a free run to the podium.

My change from the Splatterscope to Dual Squelcher isn't yet changing my fortune in tonight's Rainmaker battles.

Wailed near the podium in Rainmaker

1st April 2016 – 5.14 pm

0-11 with the Splatterscope, but I carry the Rainmaker 7 times (once by accident), and do a pretty good job of avoiding the Killer Wails.

Even with my performance with the charger, I am pleased with my contribution to the battle.

Toughing it out in Rainmaker

31st March 2016 – 5.41 pm

Tip: don't jump in front of a charger trying to lay down an ink path.

Tip: don't squid away quite so enthusiastically without first checking that you do, in fact, have the Rainmaker.

Tip: don't walk slowly up to a Splash Wall if you are equipped with a charger. This is when you back away.

If only we had another couple of seconds in the battle. I could have got splatted once more.

Many mistakes are made in Mahi Mahi Resort Rainmaker

30th March 2016 – 5.28 pm

Not all the mistakes are made by me, but I reckon a good portion of them are. It's my first game of the evening, I've made the bold choice of the Splatterscope in Mahi Mahi Resort, and I turn out to be playing against players obviously better than me.

Honestly, I'm just glad I got a positive splat ratio.

Getting close on Bluefin Depot in Tower Control

29th March 2016 – 5.17 pm

Bluefin Depot was my bogey level at the start of the evening, getting splatted everywhere by squids almost completely ignoring the tower. Even with my change from the Tri-slosher to the Dual Squelcher, would this change? Thankfully, yes.

The tower was the focus of attention: they wanted us off of it, because we were on it. That's how it should be.

The range of the Dual Squelcher came nicely in to play again, able to engage squids at a good distance, including the pesky E-litre charger. Maybe I couldn't splat him all the time, but I was enough of a nuisance to make him move.

Another good game, even if I still get splatted more than I get splats. I rode the tower and contributed to the team.

Rough ride in Tower Control

28th March 2016 – 5.35 pm

A couple of frustrating Tower Control battles had me almost quitting for the night. The Tri-slosher wasn't working against aggressive splatters who pretty much ignored the objective, which wasn't the way I wanted to play. But I decided to switch weapon and give it another go. I like Splatoon too much.

I went for the Dual Squelcher. Maybe the Echolocator isn't great, but I didn't want the Custom DS because then I'd have to work out where to place Beakons. Having said that, the Echolocator does have its uses, particularly when mounting a surprise rear attack.

Whether it was the longer range, or just changing the team around, but at least squids wanted to get on the tower, and I was able to engage them properly. Even when they turned the battle around, I felt I was contributing positively to a game of Tower Control, and not just being splat bait.

Hard won Splat Zones

27th March 2016 – 5.23 pm

16-6 in Splat Zones with the Splattershot Jr. I must be doing something right. This may be one of my best Splat Zone battles so far, and certainly with a shooter.

I am particularly pleased with hunting down that pesky charger, and downright proud of lobbing a Splat Bomb on his perch between 2:00 to 2:10. My manoeuvrability seems to be up to scratch too, which pleases me.

Something says it will be downhill from here, and it kinda is. No other battles are quite like this, and I even get splatted more than splat, but I end up with more wins than losses for the rest of the evening, and keep my coveted A rank for another day.

Back-and-forth Splat Zones

26th March 2016 – 5.41 pm

Splat Zones will be the death of my ranking. I get what I have to do, and I kinda can do it sometimes, but other squids just seem that much better than me a bit too often. Today seems to be an exception, at least as far as wins goes.

I am eternally unsure what weapon to use in Splat Zones. They all have advantages and disadvantages, both in what they offer and how comfortable I am with them. Today, I go with the Splattershot Jr. At least it can spray ink everywhere for ages and the Bubbler should help avoid too many splats. That's the theory, anyway.

This second battle of the evening is interesting in how the lead swings. We get a good start, then get pushed back. The other team keep pressing too, keeping us away from the Splat Zones themselves, and I wonder why we don't do that. And then we do. It's an interesting battle.
