Turning the battle around in Spongebob Splatfest (1062p, 3-5, Slosher)

1st November 2016 – 7.00 pm

Sloshing appears to be working, either in itself or by good squidmates lifting my morale. I almost don't mind that I completely fluff that first jump to the lower leve in Bluefin Depot. I must confess, that isn't the only time it happened this evening. Or this battle.

The Slosher works well on Bluefin Depot. Perhaps more on our side of the map than theirs, but it still comes in handy flushing them out from their perches above. If only it would reach down to that Squiffer.

The battle looks bad with one minute to go. We have been pushed back to our side of the map completely, and everything beyond the first third is inked yellow. But we have the tenacity and ability to push back.

We splat the Squiffer and take control of that lower section, and from there we can not only press on to their side of the map but the move charges up a couple of Inkstrikes. That helps too.

In the end, it's a victory for us! It was quite the turn-around, too.

Finally, a positive battle in Spongebob Splatfest (1617p, 4-2, Slosher)

1st November 2016 – 7.00 am

A couple more battles with the Slosher and things seem to be gelling. Finally. I think it's a combination of the weapon and having good squidmates.

I stay unsplatted for quite a while, which is impressive. I almost don't want to get in to trouble after the first splatting, in case it sets off a chain reaction of renewed sucking. Thankfully, I seem to actually be having a good battle.

Good job, squidmates. A good victory, good support, and I'm able to make a positive contribution to the battle.

Nothing's working in Spongebob Splatfest (1014p, 0-5, Slosher)

31st October 2016 – 7.00 pm

Another change of weapon, because my previous team was feeling a little mediocre. This time, I'm back to a bucket, but with the standard Slosher. It has an Inkstrike, and probably a sub-weapon that I forget about.

Mostly, the slosher should be good at covering turf without my needing to get close to anyone. That's not as good a feature if the other team's inklings either also don't need to get close to me, or can run really fast with an Inkbrush.

Sure, I make the occasional poor decision, but I don't think I am this bad by default. And I ink a good amount of turf. Over a thousand points without a win bonus is pretty good.

No splats, though, is abysmal, and demoralising. If I can't make the Slosher work, I don't know what I'll do.

Not sucking qute so hard in Spongebob Splatfest (1101p, 3-4, Wasabi Splattershot)

31st October 2016 – 7.00 am

Okay, I couldn't get the Tri-slosher to work, or the Splatterscope, or the Dual Squelcher. What's left? The Wasabi Splattershot was pretty good when I tried it the other day in Splat Zones, so it could be good in Turf War. And I think it is, or it could be.

The Splattershot feels good in my suction cups, and the familiarity of the Splat Bomb helps keep me orientated. The Inkstrike works well for covering turf, I just need to remember that I don't have a Bubbler.

At least in this battle I don't feel overwhelmed, even if I still don't get a positive splat ratio. I seem to be making a difference, which is good.

Although I can't get a last-second Inkstrike charged, I manage to avoid a last-second splatting.

Doing my best in Spongebob Splatfest (889p, 0-3, Tri-slosher)

30th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

I think your Rank affects your teams in Splatfests now. That's unfortunate, because I'm really not an S-Rank player, but am stuck in S Rank as the Splatfest begins. And I'm having a rough time in these Turf Wars.

I've already tried the stalwart Splattershot Jr, the Berry Splattershot Pro, and am on to the Tri-slosher in an attempt to get any kind of positive result. It's not really working.

I'm sloshing lots of ink, covering plenty of turf, but the splats elude me. I'm just outclassed, much as I am in S-Rank battles. This is not a fun experience.

I try my best, but it just isn't good enough against much better opposition.

Mostly sucking at Splat Zones (6-8, Wasabi Splattershot)

30th October 2016 – 7.00 am

I've been battling with the Splatterscope mostly out of spite, thinking it would suck me out of S Rank quicker, but I appear to be treading water. Fine, I'll mix it up, so that things don't get stale, and try some new weapons.

And not just my previous weapons, but some of the new weapons. After a couple of poor battles, I end up with the Wasabi Splattershot, thinking that my familarity with the Splat Bomb and the ability of the Inkstrike to cover lots of turf should be good in Splat Zones. Even so, I'm still playing against inklings much better than me.

I get some decent splats here and there, and the Inkstrike does come in handy for covering the Splat Zones. I still get somewhat frustrated from being splatted and suppressed for most of the battle. But I'm trying.

My efforts seem to contribute too, which is good. My being splatted down the side alley at least holds up the other inklings, and I generally take one of them out as I go.

The best bit of the battle is the last stand we make, as we head in to overtime. I particularly like my risky choice to launch an Inkstrike in to the Splat Zone from inside the Splat Zone. Quite the comeback!

Finding our own way of having fun in Rainmaker (2-9, Splatterscope)

29th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

After a couple of average battles, I get to one where I simply can't get a foothold. I am out-classed, can't even hold turf, and am splatted from unexpected directions too often for me to be having any fun.

My mood drops steadily, until I finally have had enough. I can't compete in this battle, and I see no point in continuing. I'm sorry for my squidmates, but, then, I'm really not making much of a difference.

Also note that, by the time I've given up, our team hasn't progressed the Rainmaker beyond the initial two-point minimal lead I took with an early carry.

As in previous S-Rank battles, I put my gamepad down and ponder on the decisions I made, and how I hope I'm not annoying my squidmates. But what is this? One of them isn't moving from the spawn either.

I pick up my gamepad again and do what comes naturally. We make our own fun!

A third squidmate joins in, because this is actually better than being stomped on. Our fourth is actually making a really good effort at carrying the Rainmaker as we head towards the end of the battle. But he, too, decides to join us. Or at least see what we're doing, bringing the Rainmaker all the way back home.

Not a great battle for me, but the spirit of my squidmates cheers me up immensely. I hope they ended up having fun too.

Efficient squidmates in Rainmaker (1-2, Splatterscope)

29th October 2016 – 7.00 am

That E-litre 3K was in the previous battle. I don't rate my chances of survival in this one. But I spy her early and try to sneak a splat, which, naturally, doesn't go my way.

I regroup, though, which I have to do by myself, because my squidmates have taken the Rainmaker and run with it. Quite a good distance too.

I catch up, try to lay down some covering ink, mostly over the podium, and give them a well-earned 'Nice!' for being pretty awesome.

The 'Nice' is a little early, giving me time to be splatted again, but another squidmate recovers the Rainmaker and dunks it. I just rode their coattails! Even so, Woomy!

Making up for an earlier mistake in Rainmaker (6-6, Splatterscope)

28th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

First battle of the evening, and I get caught up a bit in a charger showdown. I don't know why, I'm likely to lose.

It also means I have no idea where the Rainmaker is, because I'm not looking at either the progress meter at the top of the screen or my gamepad. Not until I get a couple of lucky-ish splats with a well-time Splat Bomb.

By the time I've worked out where the Rainmaker is, it's not there any more. I'm playing catch-up, and losing at that. How embarrassing.

I try to make up for my indiscretion by taking responsibility for the Rainmaker. Okay, I would have done that anyway, but in this case doing so and going an alternative route works! The option to squid through the grate when I did probably helped.

We have the lead back! I'd like to keep it, even if it means staying in S Rank for longer, so I do what I can to keep our turf inked, and try to get some splats where I can. I think I do quite well, overall.

Getting inky in Rainmaker (5-3, Splatterscope)

28th October 2016 – 7.00 am

More morale-destroying losses in S-Rank Rainmaker follow the previous battle. But I persevere. I have to, or I'll never drop out of S Rank, or never play Ranked battles again.

A decent first splat is followed by inching off my perch. Oops. I exercise caution and don't press forwards to the heated centre, and instead make my way back. So that I can get splatted in revenge, it seems.

The purple team get a great lead, thanks to some good turf control. A fellow charger gets the all-important splat on the Rainmaker before it can be dunked, but takes the splat for it too. I have to satisfy myself with mopping up a stray inkling.

It's not likely that we'll get a victory in this battle, which kinda suits me, and I'm also getting a few good splats in, so the battle is going quite well overall, particularly as we get a decent offensive push, so we're not forever on the back foot.

I don't always know where the Rainmaker is in this battle. And I am nowhere near as good as my fellow S-Rank squids. But I do my best, and sometimes that seems like it's enough.
