Keeping it green in Splat Zones (4-5, Tri-slosher)

22nd October 2016 – 7.00 pm

More Camp Triggerfish Splat Zones. I try a new tactic for the start of this battle, squidding right down the middle and through our Splat Zone to falnk the enemy a different way.

The plan works initially, helped by the good inking of my squidmates, but I am spotted and awaited as I cross the bridge. Never mind! I try again, pausing only ink our Splat Zone. I get a little further, but not much, and no splat. But my squidmate gets him, so that's good.

We've had inklings come around the side in the meantime, and I take time to cover up their easy squidding path, only to get splatted. Oh well. A second attempt doesn't end any better. Do I learn my lesson? Yes! I take the central route again. It doesn't seem much safer, but I hold my own against the Splat Charger.

Another opportunity to flank, another time splatted, thanks to opposing Bubblers. But the reset back to base gives me another opportunity to take on the charger and win, just as he desperately tries to get the Killer Wail out too.

All of this inking and splatting, most of it in opposition territory, ensures that the Splat Zones stay mostly our colour. We get the knockout victory with some time to spare. Woomy!

More than enough for the Splat Zones (4-2, Tri-slosher)

22nd October 2016 – 7.00 am

Sticking with the Tri-slosher, Camp Triggerfish comes up. Do I slide down the middle, or go around the side? Around the side, I think. It's worked for me before with the Tri-slosher, so let's see how it works out this time.

A bit of caution seems to work for me, letting me ink the Splat Zones and get a splat. Pressing further in to opponent territory offers new opportunities for flanking, which I take with both suction cups. I bag a couple of splats and irritate the opposition before I'm splatted back to the base.

It looks like we're losing the closer Splat Zone, so I make my way down the left route, aiming to slosh ink down from atop the fence. But by the time I get there my squidmates have the Splat Zone covered. That's fine by me. I disrupt an inkling across the gap, which is about all I can do, and watch for ink to cover.

I don't have long to wait. We're quite in control, it seems, and the count ticks down to a knockout victory fairly quickly. Woomy!

Not enough to control the Splat Zones (11-8, Tri-slosher)

21st October 2016 – 7.00 pm

I don't fancy my chances with the Splatterscope in Splat Zones, despite one of the maps being Camp Triggerfish. So what weapon shall I use. The Tri-slosher is a favourite, and that both lets me throw ink around and be mobile. Along with the Disruptor, keeping opponent ink levels low, it should do me okay.

I get a great start to this battle. I think about going around the outside to flank, but pause to get some ink in the Splat Zone. Going around the back is a good move too, with no one coming up the side.

From there, I get a bit too embroiled in a scrap that shouldn't be personal, with an inkling trying to flank us. I realise I shouldn't be doing this, so change my tack again, which does wonders for my splats and productivity.

I mix up trying to keep a bit of ink in the Splat Zones, out-flanking our opponents, and keeping the opposition flanker away from our base. It all works our rather well for me, but not quite so well for our team.

The Splat Zones stay purple more than teal, despite my best efforts to keep the other team suppressed, and I start the evening with a loss. Never mind, it was a good battle!

Letting the Splat Zones take care of themselves (6-2, Tri-slosher)

21st October 2016 – 7.00 am

As often happens when I'm having a bad streak of getting splatted and stomped, I decide to let the objective do what it wants and instead skirmish around the map.

I get to a decent spot early, but misjudge where the Dynamo Roller is, and how long it takes for him to flick. Never mind, carry on! Straight down the middle, no one will suspect that. And a diversion, sloshing ink down for a splat.

That Octobrush is made of stern stuff, certainly less squishy than the Dynamo Roller. At least, the first time I try to splat him. The second he splats like normal. That was weird.

We've got the upper hand. Maybe I am being a suitable distraction, or my squidamtes are just that good. Hopefully a combination of those effects. Either way, it lets me push pretty high on the map, and look to get one final splat before the score counts down. Nope, I get two final splats! Woomy!

Keeping the Splat Zones purple (4-3, Tri-slosher)

20th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

I didn't make a good shake of the Splatterscope in Splat Zones. I don't think it's the maps, and I don't think it's the weapon. Maybe it's me, my ability waxing and waning like my mood, or maybe there's a cyclic nature behind when I'm matched against the skilful, wide-awake Japanese players.

Whatever the reason, I abandon the Splatterscope for a more mobile weapon, once again opting for the Tri-slosher. I think of the Splattershot Jr first, but then think the Disruptor would be a better sub-weapon in Splat Zones. So here I go.

The first battle or two still don't go well for me, but I persevere, mostly because I would like to have at least one decent battle. And this one seems okay. Avoiding that Roller was fun, even if I get splatted immediately after, and I don't get the Roller splat.

But it's about mobility, so I squid head-first in to a Roller. No, but really, I slink around the sides to try to get up and behind the opposition. I actually get there too, but there's no one around.

A little wait and here they come. Thank goodness for my Bubbler, and a slightly reckless inkling. And I admit that the follow-up splat is a little cheap. Bad Tiger Ears. I deserved to be baited by a Sprinkler for that.

A bit of inking of the Splat Zones, and I wait for my ink to refill, and for inklings to appear. There's one, but before I can get to him, we win. Woomy?

Quick-moving squids in Rainmaker (6-5, Tri-slosher)

20th October 2016 – 7.00 am

Whee, the Tri-slosher! What a lovely, silly, effective weapon. Quick moving, low-aiming, disrupting. It bags me two splats at the start of the battle, and only loses a third because of a Splash Wall.

I keep on splatting, even avoiding a Roller, thankfully, but I'm sure he'll get me back. I'm sure something is happening with the Rainmaker, and as one squidmate does to support it directly I head the other way, hoping, like a squidmate, to flank effectively. That doesn't work so well, though.

I take a more direct route and splat the Rainmaker as it heads back our way, taking green ink to the face for my troubles. But it seems to be a good trade.

As I try to add some support by distracting the green inklings, my squidmates are going straight for the podium. Surprise knockout! Woomy!

Doing more with a bucket in Rainmaker (14-9, Tri-slosher)

19th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

Okay, I'm swapping the Splatterscope for a different weapon. The Splattershot Jr? No, the Tri-slosher, I think. I'm sure I can do some damage with the bucket. Or I can squid in to the laser sight of an E-litre 3K quite effectively.

More precaution needed. So, of course, I spot the E-litre 3K and head straight towards it. Mind you, keeping the E-litre busy maybe helps my squidmates take a charge down the centre of the map with the Rainmaker. And that lets me join in and get three excellent sloshing splats!

I follow-up those splats with some more, feeling much better about my weapon choice. So good, in fact, that I try to flank the E-litre 3K completely, going via their base. But this isn't a Turf War, and the purple inklings splat me easily, as I once again forget about my Bubbler.

But the splats keep coming, including on a vulnerable E-litre 3K (when the Rainmaker should probably be my target). I splat the Rainmaker a bit later, on his way to our base, so that's good. I push forwards to re-ink the turf, and only realise a bit late that the inkling above is launching an Inkstrike! Never mind, an inkling is super-jumping in, so I stay to splat them, and it's the E-litre 3K, who can't Burst Bomb me quickly enough. Nice.

A bit of flanking at the end of the battle doesn't get me the splat I was looking for, but only because a squidmate beat me too it. And it does get me the Rainmaker, once I burst its shield, and I carry it as the clock ticks down to victory for us. Woomy!

Back and forth mayhem in Rainmaker (5-7, Splatterscope)

19th October 2016 – 7.00 am

Tonight's not my night with the Splatterscope. I'm not getting the splats, my aim isn't there. More than usual.

I may not be aiming well, but I'm squidding okay. I squid up a neat wall to the Rainmaker to start with, even if I probably shouldn't, but I survive, and get a go with the Rainmaker.

I somehow make it up the wall, and splat the inkling chasing me. Things are looking good, with support with me, until my instincts kick in and I pause, not moving back forwards quickly enough to avoid the Splat Bomb rolled my way. Never mind.

I try to sneak around the back, thinking I'd get a sneaky splat, but the other team are ahead of me, literally. I am even too late with a Splat Bomb Rush to stop them. We lose our lead.

I don't quite know how my Splat Bomb didn't splat the Rainmaker, and I can only assume my shot wasn't charged enough, but it's a little frustrating, to add on top of that Splattershot still on the other team. Maybe I can grow up to be that good.

Another push by us gets us the lead back, which would be more convincing if I could aim and splat those inklings raining ink down from above. This is hopefully good practice, though. And it does get a bit hectic in that space. I should perhaps be hanging back.

In the dying seconds of the battle, the purple team get the Rainmaker back and push close to the podium. It almost looks like they'll get a late knockout, but we endure and get one last chance ourselves. It's a long shot, though, from deep in our territory to deep in theirs, with no mistakes, and we barely get past half way. Never mind.

Just about competent in Rainmaker (5-6, Splatterscope)

18th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

I'm not really feeling it with the Splatterscope this evening. That should be a hint to swap weapons, but I did want to get back in to practice with the Splatterscope, so I'll persevere for now.

Or maybe I should swap to the Splattershot, as that inkling with the rather basic clothes is doing a bit too well. He could be smurfing. Or just be very good. It doesn't take much to make me look average with a Splatterscope equipped.

I can still provide some support. That is, if I could jump over a grate. But not doing so gives me a new perspective, mostly of that Splattershot inkling bunging Burst Bombs everywhere.

At least I have my little moment of glory, just before the game ends. Splatting the Rainmaker, avoiding the Splattershot, Splat Bombing his super-jumping squidmate, then splatting him, and squidding around the corner to take out the opposing Splat Charger.

It's a distinctly average battle for me, but that ending pulls it out of the mire.

Raining ink in Splat Zones (8-5, Slosher)

18th October 2016 – 7.00 am

My losing streak continues. I've tried a bunch of weapons too. One last try to be useful in Splat Zones, and I shall opt for the basic Slosher. It should throw plenty of ink around, and hopefully keep me a safe distance away from trouble, as long as I control my impetuous nature.

We battle on Moray Towers, which is almost perfect for the Slosher. I can sit on the ledge above our Splat Zone and keep good control of it. I can even spot if the other team's inklings try to flank me. So that's what I do, at least for a minute.

It looks like we are in control and that Splatterscope is causing problems. Enough problems that I think I can help, so down I squid and, well, get caught up in a lot of purple ink. Back to Plan A.

I keep good control of our Splat Zone again, although maybe that's more to do with my squidmates holding back the opposition. And once again I am tempted forwards, only to meet resistance immediately.

But the third time, I actually splat a couple of encroaching inklings, charge my Inkstrike, and hit that Splatterscope with the Inkstrike! That's being useful.

I follow up the Inkstrike to go behind opposition lines, and almost effectively. Perhaps I should have backed off from the super-jumper a bit further.

In the final minute, we take solid control of the two Splat Zones to take a lead that probably won't be beaten, not if I keep a calm head. So it's back to the ledge and protecting our Splat Zones again. Finally, a win this evening.
