Going around the Splat Zones (4-2, Tri-slosher)

12th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

I love Flounders Heights. So many routes to take, so many walls to squid up, so many ways to get ambushed. Ideally, I would be the one doing the ambushing, and I think I am in this battle.

I zip past the Splat Zones with an eye to coming up behind the opposition, but I notice some purple ink as I land. There be inklings! I turn to slosh, and catch the squid mid-wall climb. Nice. Time to continue with the plan.

Of course, the splatting diversion delays me slightly, so the rest of my plan doesn't really come about, but that's okay. I find one more purple inkling as my Bubbler pops. I then find a Dynamo Roller. Poo.

I find the Dynamo Roller again, after what I think is some nifty manoeuvring. His ink seems to hit me before it is splahsed, which is frustrating, but there's little I can do about that.

A new route this time, catching another inkling whilst he hassles my squidmate, and then moving forwards presses me in to a difficult situation. Bubbler to the rescue! And my squidmates! They hold the Splat Zones to a knockout victory, saving my tentacles.

Mildly disrupting the Splat Zones (7-9, Tri-slosher)

12th October 2016 – 7.00 am

Maybe I should only upload the first part of this battle. I think I do rather well, particularly with it being my first battle of the evening. Well, okay, once I find my way around Ancho-V Games Splat Zones again, remembering that dead end.

Splatting that Luna Blaster was good, but my ink coverage and his movement made me feel either laggy or slow. Following up with the Mini Splatling was actually pretty good too, I think.

A couple of splats later, and it seems I'm back to being average. Or at least predictable enough to be splatted easily. And low on ink. A dive down to the lower floor is hilarious, caused by an uninked portion of the turf slowing my squid down. Routing around that just gets me splatted, so I go back to the earlier route and just lay down some more ink. Obvious, really.

Splatting the Mini Splatling as he squids up to me, as I'm in his turf, was lucky but fun. Not avoiding the Dynamo Roller by keeping on backing away was just silly. But we are holding the turf, and as I respawn I pause for the counter to tick down so I can give a 'Nice!' without being permature for once.

It's a lead we hold on to, which is good. Not a knockout maybe, but a good victory, and a good start to the evening. I do like my little Tri-slosher.

Almoooost in Rainmaker (10-9, Tri-slosher)

11th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

I decide which side to flank based on the side of the podium I start on for this battle. I can't help but pause for a splat, though. Once I'm back on track, I flank effectively, although maybe without splats.

The splats come from a second flanking move, once I work out how to squid up the block. But it looks like I ought to follow the Rainmaker. I do that, and help get us the lead. I don't have much success working out what the Roller is doing based on his shadow, though.

Approaching from the side again gets me close to an inkling, but I get distracted by them and a purple inkling carries the inkling rather too close to our base. Our lead is lost.

A bit more skirmishing gets a couple more splats. When we recover the Rainmaker we take it up the side route and get ourselves in a good position. I have a good weapon too, but one that has run out of ink. If I had a bit more, maybe we could have got the knockout.

The Rainmaker comes back our way. We stop their progress again, and a Killer Wail helps to burst the shield. A purple Killer Wail comes the other way, though, and although I avoid it, I don't have the Rainmaker, as I thought. I press on anyway, mostly because I fall down the gap, and try to ink a path forwards.

We have one last chance as the timer ticks down. But it is one last chance being rained on my a ink bombs from all over the place. Oh well, well played, purple inklings.

Clearing the way ahead in Rainmaker (3-2, Tri-slosher)

11th October 2016 – 7.00 am

I'm sticking with the Tri-slosher. Maybe I should re-introduce more weapon variety, but I like the bucket quite a lot. I'm also sticking with my plan to flank the opposition early and often.

I don't catch out an inkling quite so easily this battle, and although I disrupt him it is a little late, and we splat each other.

A brief pause to burst the Rainmaker's shield and I am back harrassing the same Roller, getting him disrupted enough to force him to super-jump away from me. I push forwards, but only in to the laser of a charger, splatting me from a narrow angle.

Okay, I'll go the other way. The extra block allows easy and occasionally unexpected access to the side route of the opposition, and this time it brings me next to a Beakon. A Beakon, as it happens, that some hapless inkling is super-jumping to just as I break it. Or maybe the super-jump breaks it, which is my my ink splats the inkling instead.

Forwards! I can sense more disruption ahead of me, and my squid-senses tingly enough to pop my Bubbler as a reaction. Good timing! Maybe I don't get the splats I was after, but I survive, and get a sneaky splat on the charger.

I try to ink the turf and the podium, but am low on ink. A quick squid to recharge and I am sloshing ink again, squidding up the podium to slosh it further. But it seems my squidmates are on point, and I get to the top of the podium a split-second after the Rainmaker carrier. I didn't expect that. Hopefully my disruption helped. Woomy!

A good start going tits up in Rainmaker (7-8, Tri-slosher)

10th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

My first battle of the session, and I am already thinking about flanking the opposition and being a disruption. It works quite well to start with, although that first splat had the inkling perhaps lacking a little awareness. The following two were just my good positioning, though.

I make a poor decision to jump on to the crate rather than go around the back, and get splatted for it. From there, we are in the messy middle part of the battle, where inklings and ink are all over the place, and survival and splats come down to awareness.

I think I do quite well, evading ink coming my way, going around the back, using my Disruptor effectively. I get to the point where the Rainmaker is tantalisingly in front of me. I wait for what I think is the right moment and make a break for it. It was not the right moment.

The next push has the Rainmaker be a squidshield for me, and not the other way around. That disorientates me slightly, making me a prime target for splatting anyway. I was unlikely to survive being there, though.

On the green team's next push, I repel the Kraken effectively, and get myself in to a good position to rain ink down on the opposition, but get waylaid by the Octobrush whilst behind me our lead is beaten. Oops.

One final chance with the Rainmaker, and it falls to me to make it. I ink and squid as quickly as I can, but the brief splashes of ink from the Rainmaker don't cover the green ink, letting them squid to catch me up too easily. Oh well. A win turns to a loss, as it can do so easily.

Getting inky in Rainmaker (7-8, Tri-slosher)

10th October 2016 – 7.00 am

More Tri-sloshing on Rainmaker, this time in Museum d'Alfonsino. I try for a falnking manoeuvre again to start with, after a previous battle that reminded me of the extra blocks, and it nearly works. I get a splat, but it's mutual.

I like the route, though, so I tend to use it frequently in this battle. I make a diversion when I see the blue Rainmaker in the middle of opposition territory, though, and my uncharacteristic mobility and Bubbler use gets me a couple of splats and the Rainmaker. I don't get far.

I try for some trick squidding for a bit, going for wall jumps. They would have paid off too, had the Roller not turned in to a Kraken. Undeterred, I keep going. Getting splatted by a Splat Bomb thrown by an inkling just recovering ink and throwing Splat Bombs is a bit of a lazy move, though.

Flanking the opposite route looks like it may pay off at one point, until I accidentally pick up the Rainmaker just as I Bubble. Oops. And my aim with the Disruptor still needs work, as I keep hitting obstacles.

I get to the podium in the last minute, sans Rainmaker, but it lets me be a bit disruptive, and get a good view for the countdown. Not a knockout, but a good victory, with the other team never being in control.

Flanking for the knockout in Rainmaker

9th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

Pretty much this whole match is an accident. I want to jump past the Rainmaker to get a splat or two and slow down the opposition, but I get bumped to the side.

Sure I get a splat, but not the way I wanted. Not inking the wall properly doesn't work either. But at least I make it to the top again and get my not-so-sneaky-anymore splat. By that point, the Rainmaker jumps past me. I have to appreciate his directness.

I follow the Rainmaker, popping my Bubbler half for protection, half for a full tank of ink. I try to ink the path and protect the Rainmaker, and think I get splatted.

Thankfully, it was a squidmate acting as a squidshield for me, and I recover my bearings quickly enough to give a 'Nice!' for the excellent win.

Ignoring the objective in Splat Zones

9th October 2016 – 7.00 am

I'm on a losing streak in Splat Zones. Clearly my mojo has left me. Instead of trying to cover the Splat Zones I go on a skirmish, hoping that whatever disruption I can cause will be enough to let my squidmates take control.

I start quite well, aiming to get not just behind the opposition but right behind them, and it works. I get a decent splat on the oppressing E-litre 3K. I try for a second splat, but miss with the disruptor, and slosh when I should have squidded. But never mind!

Or maybe I should mind. I skirmish a bit more, get ambushed by the E-litre 3K, now as a Kraken, and the battle ends. Knockout to them. I wasn't that disruptive, I suppose.

Going past the Splat Zones

8th October 2016 – 7.00 pm

I'm clearly in the better team in this battle. I don't honestly think I can say that I make a difference. Sure, I make a pretty good start, getting some splats, staying safe, laying down an Inkstrike, but it's my squidmates who press the advantage.

I think it's going pretty well, until I realise there is another route to the centre of the map. We should probably go back and cover that too, as we are losing the Splat Zones.

Despite my luck in getting on a decent team, I am still clearly an Inkzooka magnet. That's frustrating. Running backwards in to a Splat Bomb after I have to pause in opposition territory to refill my tank is just one of those things, though.

Another win, and maybe I can be useful in S Rank. But no, not really, as the next few games prove. I have a horrible time and, thankfully, get knocked back down to A+.

A little sloshing in the Splat Zones

8th October 2016 – 7.00 am

Still in S Rank, playing a little later. STILL there are Japanese players, now up after 5 am. Sure, this is obviously the kind of dedication I put in to my games. Whatever, I'm feeling a bit fresher, the ranked battle is now over Splat Zones, and I think a Slosher would be a good idea.

The Slosher works quite well right at the start, letting me use a block to stop ink hitting me whilst sloshing over the top of it. Ignore the part where I squid up a wall and fall down, though.

Of course, I'm cheesing my gear a little, doubling up on defence. I'm not sure how much difference it will make. Some, perhaps, but much less when I am disrupted by a Tri-slosher, or have a Splash Wall to slosh over. I am mostly just outclassed yet again.

We win, with little thanks to me, but at least I contribute a bit. Yay, I get to stay in S Rank.
